Accidents - What to do at the Scene


Carry with you at all times:

  • Emergency warning devices (reflective triangles or flares)
  • Accident report form
  • Witness report forms
  • Flashlight
  • Camera
  • Emergency telephone numbers (emergency response, if carrying H/M)
  • Important papers
    1. CDL
    2. Medical Certificate
    3. Proof of insurance
    4. Shipping papers
    5. Log book
If you are involved in an accident:
  1. Secure the Scene
    • Calm down
    • Shut down the engine
    • Extinguish cigarettes/cigars
    • Protect yourself when exiting the truck
    • Set out warning devices
    • Check for injured persons

  2. Notification
    • Notify your company
    • Notify the authorities if warranted
    • Notify your insurance carrier
    • Provide information to the above
    • Do not provide information to the media or other parties
    • DO NOT ADMIT FAULT

  3. Gather Evidence
    • Photos, if possible (no blood and gore photos!)
    • Names of witnesses
    • Required data (license/insurance) of other vehicle(s) driver(s)
    • Road and weather conditions
    • Debris (type of debris, location of debris in relation to vehicles)
    • Name and badge number of officer at scene
    • Count the people in the other vehicle(s)
    • Note extenuating circumstances of other vehicle(s)
      1. Cell phone use
      2. Alcohol containers
      3. Condition of windows (fogged, ice-covered)
      4. Windshield wipers in use?
      5. Safety belt use
      6. Lights: burning at time of accident? burning now?
      7. Quotes from other parties
