Eye
Protection
Of all our senses, the one most precious perhaps, is
our sight. Each year, thousands suffer eye injuries
that impair our vision or deprive us of sight altogether.
Over 90 percent of all eye injuries can be prevented
by following established safety rules and by using protective
eyewear that is appropriate for the task we are performing.
The most common eye hazards are flying particles (from
grinders, saws), dusts (wood, metal, airborne particles),
sparks (welding), and fumes and splashes from molten
material or chemicals. Harmful light rays (arc welding,
furnace operations) can cause painful eye burns.
Steps to protect your eyes:
- Be
alert to the eye hazards in your workplace.
- Wear
appropriate protective eyewear. This may include
glasses, goggles, hoods, face shields or helmets.
- Remember
that regular prescription lenses may not protect
you from the hazards in the workplace.
-
Make sure your protective eyewear fits properly
and is clean and in good condition.
-
Replace faulty protective eyewear immediately.
- Follow
established safety rules for the workplace.
-
Learn basic first aid for eye injuries.
-
Know where eyewash stations and first aid kits are
located.
-
In the event of an injury, get medical help immediately.
