Slips, Trips and Falls-Prevention

Each year, falls injure or kill thousands of people, causing pain and suffering, lost wages, and medical expenses. We are exposed to these hazards both at home and in the workplace.

Some of the hazards:

  • Hidden steps, when turning a corner, stepping outside, or walking in poor light.
  • Smooth surfaces that are slick (recently waxed, wet, icy, greasy)
  • Carpets that are not tacked down, nor do they have a gripping, rubber mat under them.
  • Loose flooring, such as tiles, bricks, boards.
  • Tools, debris and other items left in walkways.
  • Obstructions on stairs and in other areas (open file cabinet drawers).

The solutions:

  • Good housekeeping is the major consideration to avoid slips, trips and falls. Walkways and floor areas must be kept clear. Do not position electrical cords in a walk area. Do not leave drawers open. Do not leave tools and equipment lying on the floor.
  • Make sure proper lighting is available so you can see where you are stepping.
  • Do not use makeshift ladders. If you have to reach high areas, use an approved, sturdy ladder.
  • Repair or replace worn or torn stair treads; broken floor components; sidewalks and walkways.
  • Wear proper footwear (non-skid).
  • Sit properly, with all four chair legs on the floor.
  • Get help when carrying large, awkward loads.
  • DO NOT JUMP FROM A STAGE, DOCK, OR TRUCK!

The proper method for entering and exiting a truck:

  1. Wear proper footwear
  2. Know the equipment. If you use different trucks, know where the steps, ladders and grab bars are.
  3. Use the 3-point system. Always have 3 limbs in contact with the cab.
  4. Look before exiting. Know where you will step, to avoid potholes, cracks, ice, snow, foreign objects.
  5. Exit in the right direction. Face the cab getting in; face the cab backing out.
