• New Licensing Expands Design-Build Capabilities at North Santiam Paving

STAYTON, ORE. 19 JUNE, 2019—North Santiam Paving (NSP) employees Levi Warriner and Michael Downs have passed the exams to earn their licenses as a Professional Engineer (PE) and Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), respectively. This will allow NSP to continue its long history of offering clients complete design-build services providing more value for their dollar by providing every aspect of a project under one roof. By offering these services in-house, from planning to design, approvals and construction, these new licensed skills will save NSP time and the client money.

Warriner just passed the last of a series of exams, Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE). He had already passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and is considered an Engineer in Training (EIT). In September 2020, Warriner will have completed the required four years of training and supervised work under NSP’s Professional Engineer (PE), Bill Lulay, and will apply for his Professional Engineer “stamp.” Stamped design drawings are required on most construction projects.

Lulay says, “Becoming a professional engineer gives you the experience, knowledge and confidence to identify issues before construction happens, saving the client money and NSP time.” He adds, “While the engineer designs, the surveyor checks. Now, when NSP identifies potential and actual conflicts, our professional land surveyor will have the letters behind his name to give engineers and owners confidence in his decisions in the field.”

Michael Downs recently passed the Oregon-specific exam for surveying administered by the Oregon Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. He has also passed both the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) and Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exams. Downs is now in the process of submitting his application to finalize becoming a PLS.

Today, virtually all projects, require surveying to be completed under the supervision of a licensed surveyor. Having a licensed PLS on staff gives the company the authority to oversee the required construction staking, sign subdivision plats or file property surveys—all of which NSP does for clients.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Levi and Michael for these achievements. At NSP, we recognize our strength and growth comes from our people,” said Pete Sipos, General Manager of North Santiam Paving. “For our clients, when working with our design-build team, they can rely on us to be accountable for every aspect of the project—from cradle to grave, as they say—all under one roof. Design-build with licensed professionals and an experienced contractor is the best way to derive more value from a project.”
